FLY
is the result of a research and development project by random media to explore new and innovative human/computer interface methods. Drawing from a variety of gaming, moving image and interactive design influences, FLY has been designed to give the user the opportunity to experience flight through a 3D environment, affecting the audio and visual composition according to their interaction. The interaction relies solely on body movement- specifically interpreting directional movement of the users arms as an interactive control.
By spreading their arms the user can control speed while horizontal and vertical directional elevation is used to control pitch and turn. There is no physical 'input device'- instead all interactivity is based on the interpretation of movement. FLY has been made using fundamentally basic technology in the form of a webcam and two simple coloured plastic balls. The result however is an engaging, immersive and organic experience representing the interface between technology and human behaviour.
Presented at OFFF '04, the installation was a success with lines of potential users gathering all day and night for the duration of the festival.
